Open Lectures: From Model to Makar – a Life in the Arts

Open Lectures Our Open Lectures series celebrates the research, projects, collaborations, events and professional practices of our teaching staff at the Centre for Open Learning. Our courses are designed and taught by an extraordinary range of talented and dedicated academics, practitioners and professionals. Many enjoy long and distinguished careers whilst others are in the early stages, perhaps in the midst of their postdoctoral study or working on their first book or exhibition. Our new series will bring our learning community together to listen and engage with our tutors, as they reveal the story behind their own practices and research, perhaps through a funded project, a commission or continuing professional development. From Model to Makar – a Life in the Arts After leaving school at 16, Ron Butlin became a song-lyricist, footman, model and, finally, a writer leading to study at the University of Edinburgh after a five-year gap. In this lecture, Ron will touch on his unusual career path before moving on to discuss his methods of writing, working with musicians and artists, and creativity in general. Ron Butlin shall talk about his unusual path to becoming a novelist and poet, the advantages of being a ‘late’ student as well as his creative practice and process. Having presented his work in locations ranging from a one-roomed school in Shetland to an Arab tent in the desert (with oud accompaniment), from the pulpit in St Giles to the House of Lords. Ron will read some excerpts from his work, and discuss how to get published as well as write for radio and theatre, write to commission, write libretti for composers, work with illustrators and artists, write reviews and engage in journalism. Ron Butlin Having begun life as a model, barnacle scraper, pop-lyricist and footman, the novelist Ron Butlin is also a children’s author, playwright and a former Edinburgh Poet Laureate / Makar.
