      EVENT DETAILS
Analytics Network at the University of Edinburgh Business School

The Analytics Network, part of the Operational Research Society, invites you to join to our next event that will take place at the University of Edinburgh Business School On this occasion, we will be hosting three different speakers covering a wide range of topics, each followed by a Q&A. At the end of the event, there will be plenty of time for networking Timetable: 5:00pm-6:00pm Registration and refreshments 6:00pm-8:00pm Talks 1st Speaker: Belen Martin-Barragan, Lecturer in Management Science at the University of Edinburgh Talk:  Interpretable Analytics for Transparency in the Banking Industry This talk will reflect the applications of Analytics in the banking industry. In particular we will discuss the need of transparency and the current state of the art and challenges of Analytics to cope with the legal and societal needs for more transparent Analytics. In recent years, we have witnessed a quick rise on the use of artificial intelligence and advance statistical techniques in the financial industry. These techniques provide a predictive power that is well beyond what we expected with the classical techniques.Although predictive ability is important, obtaining an easy-to-interpret classifier is also crucial in many applications. Indeed, current regulations acknowledge the ‘right-for-explanation’ of a customer that got the credit denied. 2nd Speaker: Matthew Robinson, Data Analytics Senior Specialist at IBM Talk: Making Dashboards Useful and Usable?  During this interactive presentation, Matthew will be discussing, with examples, how to make dashboards that will be viewed and used by executives and managers.  It will draw upon some of the principles of Design Thinking and how these principles can be used to create dashboards which are visually appealing and action oriented.  The session will be participative involving the audience and software agnostic.  There will be handouts to illustrate key points.  3rd Speaker: Graeme Carmichael, Senior Manager in Analytics, Automation and AI at Deloitte Talk: Automation and analytics to drive value During this talk, Graeme will be discussing the evolving automation market and how the use of analytical techniques are driving clients up the automation value curve. We know that process automation is hardly new and major players in the Scottish Financial Services and Private markets have large scale programmes underway and are achieving great results. However, we are now seeing the addition of cognitive techniques to drive true E2E automation. Graeme will show how these organisations are harnessing capabilities such as text recognition from documents, identifying images, and natural language processing to move from Robotic Process Automation through to Cognitive Automation and the role analytical professionals are playing in the delivery operating models 4th Speaker: Marilena Karanika, Modelling & Analytics Manager at Royal Bank of Scotland Talk: What is your transactional persona? With the rise of data storage capabilities and processing power, our lives have become more automated - and this includes banking too! From taking a selfie to open a new bank account to unlocking your bank app with your fingerprint things are changing rapidly and so do expectations. Do you have Spotify and Netflix? Do you use ATMs? And how often do you shop online? Could (and should) financial institutions use this information to deliver services to customers? In this talk we will take some time to discuss how understanding our financial persona can improve customers financial health and how banks can use their wealth of data to serve customers in the best possible way. 8:00pm-9:00pm Networking  For more information on the Analytics Network, upcoming events and to sign up to the Analytics Network mailing list to receive news of events similar to this, please visit the following website: http://www.theorsociety.com/Pages/SpecialInterest/AnalyticsNetwork.aspx We look forward to seeing you.
